Anthropic quietly shipped its first piece of maker hardware. 969 stars, 91 forks, no press release. The repo is a reference for a Tamagotchi-style desktop pet that talks to Claude Desktop and Claude Cowork over Bluetooth.
The hardware
An M5StickC Plus — ESP32, 135×240 color screen, IMU, two physical buttons, roughly the size of a thick USB stick. Firmware ships 18 ASCII pet characters and 7 animation states. The pet wakes when a Claude session starts. When Claude hits a permission prompt, it flips into an attention animation. Button A approves the tool call, B denies. Shake and flip-over gestures are reserved as extra input channels. Drag a GIF character pack folder into the Hardware Buddy window and it streams over BLE live.
The maker API
First time Anthropic has handed makers a wire protocol. REFERENCE.md documents a JSON schema over Nordic UART Service GATT. Claude Desktop is the BLE bridge, pushing session state, token progress and permission events to the device and relaying button presses back into the agent loop. A community port to the Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-AMOLED-1.8 already exists — same protocol, bigger screen. Surfaced as a hidden menu in Claude Desktop’s new Developer Mode, right as the Claude Code source leak had everyone digging through Anthropic’s binaries.
