Bird feeders don’t usually trend. This one did. Netvue’s Birdfy brand launched the Feeder Metal 2 on April 20, and Yahoo Tech, TechRadar, and 9to5Toys all ran reviews inside a week. TechRadar tied it back to its “craziest camera innovation at CES 2026” shortlist — except this one actually shipped.
What’s in the box
A 4K wide-angle camera bolted onto an all-metal, weatherproof outdoor feeder, with an optional solar panel for off-grid runtime. The headline feature is OrniSense — Birdfy is calling it the first LLM-based bird ID system. Instead of a closed image classifier spitting out a label, you get the species name, distinguishing field marks, and a short pop-science blurb every time a bird visits. Library covers 6,000+ species.
The webhook is the fun part
Birdfy opened a public API. Every successful identification fires an event with species, confidence score, and image URL. People are already wiring it into IFTTT and Home Assistant — flash a light when a cardinal lands, log every visitor to a Notion DB, hand the image to an agent that writes a daily Wikipedia-style journal, ping a Slack channel. r/birding is mostly arguing about whether the LLM hallucinates on rare species. Open question.
