SAP closed its acquisition of Prior Labs on July 17, committing over €1 billion across four years to turn the German startup into Europe’s leading frontier AI lab. Prior Labs is 18 months old. It raised a €9M pre-seed in early 2025. That’s one of the fastest zero-to-€1B exits Europe has ever seen.

What TabPFN actually is

While everyone chased chatbots, Prior Labs built a foundation model for tables. TabPFN is a pretrained transformer that makes predictions on structured data — spreadsheets, databases, business records — without per-dataset training. Published in Nature, it set state-of-the-art on tabular benchmarks across hundreds of independent studies, and the open-source version has 3 million downloads. The team comes from Frank Hutter, the most-cited AutoML researcher alive.

Developers can use it today

It ships as a Python package: pip install tabpfn, plus a hosted API for larger workloads. Feed it a table, get predictions — fraud detection, churn scoring, demand forecasting, no ML pipeline required.

Why SAP paid up

80% of enterprise data is tabular, and SAP sits on more of it than anyone. LLMs ignored this layer; SAP just bought the model built for it.
