OpenAI Codex hits 8 million users, then ships updates two days straight

Codex went from ~1 million users in February to 8 million by July 14. Seven-fold growth in five months. Then on July 23 Codex lead Tibo Sottiaux teased “Tomorrow is feeling codexy,” and July 24 OpenAI dropped a fresh batch of updates — a second day of launches in a row.

From coding chat to a developer’s OS

A year ago Codex was a box you typed code questions into. Now it’s an agent command center. Parallel agents run across worktrees and cloud environments at once. Skills push it past code generation into docs and prototyping. Automations pick up scheduled background work — issue triage, CI monitoring — with no prompt. Add cloud triggers, an in-app browser, and PR review, and Codex stops being a tool. It’s where the work happens.

The API angle

Codex runs on the GPT-5.6 family. The new Sol model targets high-end reasoning, coding, and science at $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output. You get skills, automations, and cloud triggers (“run a job on GitHub push after midnight”) through the same API.

Why watch this? Anthropic bumped Claude Code limits 50% within hours of the milestone. The agentic coding race is now a daily fight.
