November 12. That’s when OpenAI shuts off Cursor’s direct access to GPT models, announced in an official blog post that pulled 183 points on HackerNews within hours.
The reasoning is unusually blunt: based on its history with Elon Musk’s companies, OpenAI “cannot be confident that SpaceX will use its technology within its terms of service.” Twitter broke OpenAI’s contract terms after Musk bought it. OpenAI isn’t waiting for round two.
Why Cursor got caught in the crossfire
Cursor is the AI coding editor — the agentic IDE millions of developers use to write and ship code with frontier models. SpaceX, already merged with xAI, closed its $60B acquisition on August 14, promising Cursor “the world’s largest GPU fleet.” Two weeks later, one of its three model suppliers walked out.
What changes for developers
Right now, nothing. Claude Sonnet 5, GPT-5.6, and Gemini all still work, pricing untouched. From November, the GPT family disappears and the menu tilts toward Anthropic, Google, and xAI’s own Grok and Composer. Anthropic already refused to sell Claude to xAI once. If it follows OpenAI out the door, Musk’s $60B bet gets tested early: can Cursor survive on Grok alone?
