AI labs bought so many Mac Minis and Mac Studios that Apple can’t keep up

Top AI story on HackerNews today: 231 points on a MacRumors report that AI companies are hoovering up Mac Minis and Mac Studios, and Apple never saw it coming. The Information says OpenAI alone bought tens of thousands of them. Anthropic rents Mac mini capacity through AWS for the same job.

Why Macs, of all things

The job is training computer-use agents — AI that operates a real desktop, clicks buttons, runs software. Reinforcement learning for that needs thousands of cheap independent machines with lots of memory, not raw GPU horsepower. Apple Silicon’s unified memory pool makes a Mac Studio the best price-per-gigabyte agent box on the market. Nobody at Apple planned for this.

Apple got caught flat-footed

No enterprise AI team, no developer relations for labs, no willingness to sell Private Cloud Compute to outsiders. High-memory configs slipped to 6–8 week delays, and Apple rushed out a Mac Mini / Mac Studio refresh on August 25 — weeks ahead of its usual fall schedule. The company that whiffed on its own AI just became infrastructure for everyone else’s. That’s the desk John Ternus inherits from Tim Cook this week.
