The US Department of Defense put OpenAI and xAI on the same shelf. On August 31, GenAI.mil — the Pentagon’s internal AI chat platform — launched ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government for its 3 million military and civilian personnel.
What’s actually inside
ChatGPT Mil is accredited at Impact Level 5, the DoD cloud-security bar for Controlled Unclassified Information. That means real work — planning, policy, logistics, acquisition — not sandboxed demos. It ships with chat, file handling, projects, and custom GPTs. Grok for Government adds Auto/Fast/Expert reasoning modes, persistent projects, and reusable playbooks that turn one analyst’s workflow into institutional knowledge.
Why this matters
GenAI.mil launched nine months ago with only Google Gemini. It already counts 1.7 million unique users. Now three frontier labs compete inside one government platform, and the Pentagon explicitly framed the multi-vendor setup as a move against lock-in. Consumer chatbots were never an option for CUI data — this is the first time frontier models run in a military production environment at this scale. Every other government is watching.
