ChatGPT Health connects to Epic: 325 million patient records open to AI, read-only

Epic holds the medical records of 325 million+ patients — the largest EHR system in the US. Since September 1, clinicians can pull those records straight into ChatGPT Health: appointment notes, lab results, medications, specialist documentation, summarized on demand. It’s the first time a frontier model plugs directly into Epic.

What clinicians actually get

This is an org-level integration, not a consumer feature — for hospital systems with a Business Associate Agreement, not your personal ChatGPT account. Pre-visit reviews, clinical timelines built without leaving the patient chart, plus a public-data plug-in covering PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, and CMS coverage rules. OpenAI graded 4,300 physician-reviewed responses across 27 clinical use cases and reports 99.1% rated safe.

Why read-only is the whole story

ChatGPT can’t write to the chart, can’t place orders, can’t touch documentation. That boundary is the point: it’s the template for how regulators will let AI into clinical workflows — summarize everything, change nothing. ChatGPT Health launched to US consumers in July and already fields roughly 300 million health queries a week. Wiring the doctor’s side into the same product is how OpenAI takes both ends of the exam room.
