The awkward name is gone. NotebookLM — 30 million people, 600,000 organizations — is now Gemini Notebook, folded into the Gemini brand. But the rename isn’t the story.
From reading tool to research agent
Google gave every notebook a secure cloud computer. Upload your sources and it writes code and runs it against them — real data analysis, not summaries and podcasts. That’s the line NotebookLM never crossed. It was an excellent reader: dump in 50 PDFs, get citations, get an Audio Overview. Ask it to actually crunch the spreadsheet and it hand-waved. Now it opens a sandbox and computes.
Which makes this an agent, not a chatbot with documents attached. The grounding stays — code runs against your sources, not the open web.
Who gets it
Code execution is live today for Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra or AI Expanded access. All Pro users on the web get it over the coming weeks. Notebooks sync across the standalone app and the Gemini app, with Search’s AI Mode coming soon.
HN put it on the front page at 184 points. The rename got the jokes; the sandbox is what moves the product.
