Anthropic just gave Claude its own browser. Starting August 26, when a task in the Cowork desktop app touches the web, a browser opens in the side panel and Claude navigates, reads, clicks, and types on its own — filling forms, pulling numbers from dashboards, working through portals that have no connector.
What it actually does
This is an agent feature, not a new browser you switch to. No Chrome extension, no setup, and it never touches your own browser data unless you share it. It runs the same prompt-injection safeguards as Claude in Chrome, checking every action against what you asked for. Enterprise got it first; Pro, Max, and Team roll out over the following week on macOS, Windows, and Linux in beta.
Why the timing matters
OpenAI shut down its standalone Atlas browser on August 9, nine months after launch, folding agentic browsing back into ChatGPT. Anthropic went the opposite direction in two weeks: Chrome side panel on August 12, own browser on August 26. Same bet — agentic browsing belongs inside the assistant, not in a browser you have to adopt — but Anthropic is the one shipping the dedicated surface.
