The number one seat in AI just changed hands. Fortune reports Anthropic hit a $47 billion annualized revenue run rate, roughly 35% above OpenAI’s estimated $25-33 billion. The trajectory is absurd: $1B a year ago, $9B at the end of 2025, $30B in April 2026, $47B in May.
Claude Code is the engine
This isn’t a chatbot subscription story. Claude Code — Anthropic’s agentic coding tool that writes, tests, and ships code from the terminal — jumped from $1B annualized at the end of 2025 to $2.5B+ by February 2026, the fastest-growing product line in the company. One dev tool now makes more than most public SaaS companies.
Enterprise beat consumer
8 of the Fortune 10 and about 70% of the Fortune 100 are Claude enterprise customers. Over 1,000 companies each spend more than $1 million a year. OpenAI bet on hundreds of millions of consumers; Anthropic bet on companies with budgets. The budget side won — and the timing stings, landing right as OpenAI preps its IPO.
