Hugging Face’s Pollen Robotics opened pre-orders for Microduck: a 25cm, sub-800g bipedal robot with 15 motors, a camera, LiDAR, two IMUs, and an articulated beak that lifts 800g. It waddles, crouches, roller-skates, and stands back up after falls. $399, shipping before Christmas to North America, Europe, and the UK.
Why $399 is the real story
Trainable bipeds used to mean thousands of dollars, or weeks of 3D printing and calibration with no guarantee your build ever walks. Microduck ships working. Pollen’s earlier Reachy Mini sat on a desk and talked; this one moves. That price point is the Raspberry Pi moment for physical AI — cheap enough for students, labs, and hackers to break.
The product is the RL pipeline
The hardware is half the pitch. The SDK, simulation environment, and sim-to-real deployment stack are fully open source on GitHub: train a behavior with reinforcement learning in sim, push it to the robot, fine-tune, redeploy. Hugging Face is betting it can crowdsource robot skills the same way it crowdsourced models — every Microduck owner becomes a contributor to open physical AI.
