Grok add-on for Google Workspace (SpaceXAI) lands one week after xAI’s Microsoft 365 push

xAI is fighting a two-front war on productivity software, and it’s using “free” as the weapon. The Grok add-on for Google Workspace (SpaceXAI) drops Grok 4.5 straight into Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides — one install from the Marketplace covers all three, no charge. It went live July 21 and got the official announcement July 24, 2026.

What it actually does

It’s not a chatbot in another tab. Grok shows up as a sidebar inside each app. In Sheets it writes formulas, builds charts, and answers questions while citing the exact cells it used. In Slides it turns a rough outline into an editable deck, pulling images from the web and X. In Docs it’s the writer’s tool — restructure messy notes, fix grammar, hold tone across long drafts.

Why it matters

One week earlier, SpaceXAI shipped the same thing for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. So Grok now sits inside both Office and Workspace — aimed squarely at Copilot and Gemini, on their own turf, for zero dollars. This is a Marketplace add-on, not an open API, so the interesting part is distribution: xAI is buying its way onto the two surfaces where knowledge work already happens.
