Claude Voice Mode now runs Opus and Sonnet — and reads your Gmail out loud

Anthropic quietly turned Claude’s voice mode from a toy into a worker. On July 23, 2026, voice stopped being locked to the lightweight Haiku model. Paid users can now talk to Opus and Sonnet, and swap models mid-conversation instead of restarting.

What it actually does now

The bigger change is connectors. Voice mode plugs straight into Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva, and Notion. So you speak, and Claude reads an email thread back to you, checks tomorrow’s schedule, summarizes a doc, or acts inside those apps — across 11 languages. Free users get Haiku plus one connected app; paid unlocks every model and multi-app access.

Why it matters

Every voice assistant can chat. Almost none can do your actual work. Wiring connectors into voice is Anthropic pushing its agent story into the one interface people use while their hands are busy — driving, cooking, walking. “Read me my unread emails and draft a reply” is a very different product than “tell me a joke.”
